Breaking News: Nigerian Doctors in Benue State Go on Indefinite Strike in Solidarity with Abducted Colleague

Makurdi, Benue State – In a show of solidarity and protest against the abduction of one of their members, the Benue chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has embarked on a total and indefinite strike action. Dr. Ushakuma Anenga and Dr. Godwin Ameh, Chairman and Secretary of the NMA in Benue State, made the announcement at the end of an emergency general meeting on Friday.

The abducted doctor, Dr. Asema Msuega, who serves at Sankera General Hospital in Ukum LGA, was kidnapped in July and has been in captivity ever since. Despite relentless efforts to secure his release, the doctors have been unsuccessful, leading them to take this drastic action.

The strike action commenced at 8 am on Friday, 25th August 2023, with doctors vowing to continue the strike until their colleague is released. Additionally, a massive protest by doctors is scheduled for Tuesday, 29th August 2023, starting at 9 am at the Government House Roundabout and ending at the Government House.

The NMA understands the potential impact of the strike on healthcare services. To mitigate the effects, private hospitals and clinics will remain open during this initial stage of the strike, ensuring continued medical care for the public.

The demand of the NMA is unequivocal: the unconditional and immediate release of Dr. Asema Msuega. They implore His Excellency, the Governor of Benue State, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, as well as stakeholders and well-meaning individuals in the state, to intervene and work towards securing the young doctor’s freedom.

The NMA remains resolute in their commitment to their colleague’s cause and will not back down until justice is served. Further updates will be provided as the situation progresses.
