England’s manager Gareth Southgate, has condemned the booing of Jordan Henderson during England’s friendly against Australia.
Henderson who has been a long-serving vice-captain for the England national team, faced criticism from some of the fans after being substituted during the match.
Henderson recently switched sides from Liverpool to the Saudi Pro League, joining Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq in a £12 million deal.
His move to the Middle East club caused an uproar from a section of England supporters, and it was further complicated because Henderson had been a high-profile supporter of LGBTQ+ rights during his time at Anfield but ended up moving to Saudi Arabia where homosexuality is illegal.
Meanwhile, Southgate has come out to defend the player, stating his contribution to the England team.
“I really don’t understand it,” Southgate said. “He’s a player who I think has 79 caps now for England. His commitment and what he has delivered for England is exceptional.”
Southgate also emphasized Henderson’s role as a mentor and role model for the younger players in the squad, such as Jude Bellingham.
“Some people decided to boo. I really don’t understand what that is for,” Southgate added. “I would just say that this is a team that are delivering a lot, and they all deserve everybody’s support.”
