The community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Rachel Stone, a dedicated physical education and health teacher at Lee’s Summit High School. She lost her life in a devastating car accident involving a tractor-trailer on U.S. 50 Highway in Jackson County, Missouri. The accident occurred on Thursday morning, and it was reported that icy winter conditions in the Kansas City area played a role in causing the crash.

Who was Rachel Stone?

Rachel Stone, an esteemed physical education and health teacher at Lee’s Summit High School, met an untimely demise in a collision on U.S. 50 Highway in Jackson County, Missouri. The accident involved a tractor-trailer and was influenced by the icy winter conditions in the Kansas City area.

Rachel Stone embarked on her teaching journey as a student teacher in the district back in 1997. Her passion and dedication led to her being hired full-time in 2000. Principal Kari Harrison of Lee’s Summit High School conveyed the heartbreaking news of Stone’s passing through an email sent to parents and staff. The entire community is grieving the loss of this exceptional and cherished teacher.

It is with a heavy heart that I share devastating news with our students and families.

Mrs. Rachel Stone, a physical education and health teacher who was a valued part of our Tiger family, died this morning following a car accident on Highway 50.

Mrs. Stone was a dedicated educator who will be missed throughout the LSR7 community.

Mrs. Stone student-taught in LSR7 in 1997 and then began her career in the LSHS community in 2000. In addition to teaching, Mrs. Stone served as the girl’s assistant volleyball coach. Her husband, Scott, is a teacher at Bernard Campbell Middle School. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to Mr. Stone, their two children, and extended family.

Our school community is built on caring relationships, and we recognize that situations like this can be hard for students to comprehend or process. Additional counselors and district leaders are on campus today to support students and staff as we grieve this news, and our counseling team will continue to respond to the emotional needs of the students and staff this week.

Rachel Stone, an outstanding physical education and health teacher at Lee’s Summit High School, tragically lost her life on Thursday, February 16th, in a devastating car accident. Her vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer on U.S. 50 Highway. The cause of the crash is currently being investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a request for assistance from the highway patrol on Thursday morning regarding a crash at the intersection of U.S. 50 Highway and 7 Highway.

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the tractor-trailer skidded on icy roads, leading to a collision with oncoming traffic, including Rachel Stone’s vehicle. While the driver of the tractor-trailer survived, Stone tragically passed away at the scene of the accident.
