UCL: Newcastle whitewash PSG 4-1, to mark first Champions League victory in 20 years

Newcastle United marked their first Champions League victory in two decades after humiliating Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) 4-1 on Wednesday.

The local heroes breezed past their visitors with the help of goals from Miguel Almiron, Fabian Schar, Sean Longstaff, and Dan Burn.

The Magpies victory at St James’ Park is a historic moment, as it’s their first win in the European Cup since the 2002/03 season.

The victory boosts Newcastle’s chances of advancing to the knockout stages of the competition, as they now top Group F after two matches, with four points, following their earlier 0-0 draw against AC Milan in Italy.

PSG were the favourite team going into the match after a 2-0 win against Borussia Dortmund but became the underdogs after being outplayed by a strong Newcastle side.

Kylian Mbappe, who had previously joked about the weather in Tyneside during Euro 2020, was greeted with boos from Newcastle supporters and struggled to make an impact on the game.

Newcastle opened scoring 17 minutes into the game, when Almiron capitalized on PSG’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma’s blocking, curling the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Dan Burn doubled the lead just before halftime with a header that crossed the line despite Donnarumma’s efforts to deny it.

Just five minutes into the second half, Sean Longstaff made it three. PSG responded with their only goal in the game shortly after, all thanks to Lucas Hernandez. However, Newcastle’s Fabian Schar completed the party with a goal in added time.
